Poe in My Closet

Poe in My Closet

A Poem by The Bard's Apprentice
"

I was VERY tired and a little out of it one night when my friend quoted E.A. Poe. I wanted to check the translation, so I pulled out my copyright 1901,illuminated, first edition Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe....

"

A rhyme did I spy
which was dear to mine eye,
but abridged it must surely be.
So I went to my store,
& pulled a locked box therefore
to see what the true version may be.

Now for many a year,
the box had remained drear,
its prize surely decaying in gore.
And so with much care
and a breath hardly dared,
I brought it forth once more.

Now the author waxed dark.
And nowhere was there spark
of Heaven's elysian grace.
So, sure as rotting meat,
I swear a heard a beat
from the heart of that dark place.

Not frightened was I
in that box for to spy
on the thing that must await.
I threw open the lid
and nearly shrieked as I hid
from the foulness rushing the gate!

Pus and gore
and so much more
did overflow my prize.
But as I looked back
at the tattered black
it was just books of normal size.

Laugh I did
at such a foolish kid
who imagined such horrid things.
So as I looked for my page,
I thought, in my rage,
of the vengeance I must now bring...

to Catalin for making me crazy!

How delightfully written! I love Edgar Allan Poe and I think he would have dearly adored your rendition of him! Great write! Good job!
