Dizzy Gillespie and cheeks: A jazzy Google Doodle

A Story by BarbieL

Google Doodle gives a nod today to one of the best " John Birks Gillespie " on what would have been the jazz trumpeter's 93rd season within the sun. Gillespie passed away in 1993 at the age of 75. Most people knew him as "Dizzy" Gillespie, whose face puffed up like a great jazz chipmunk with musical chestnuts to deliver to the ears of songs fans. His fashion sense (beret, goatee and horn-rimmed glasses), signature bent horn and scat singing helped popularize the newest jazz form known as bebop. The cheeks on Dizzy Gillespie is what many remember about him. Nevertheless, bebop became popular because he could control the trumpet at such a breakneck tempo. Within the 1940s, bebop became successful and popular because of pianist Thelonious Monk, saxophonist Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. The things remembered about these individuals are the eighth-note runs throughout the range of the instrument, a mix of improvisation harmonic and melodic, and the use of vertical improvisation which goes via the scales vertically rather than the tradition horizontal scales.

Gillespie says that "bebop" originated from scat singing, although you will find other origins suspected. He said it is like scat singing which works to put random syllables together that do not make sense all together. Wikipedia explains that when requesting a scat piece, Gillespie had an audience coin the term. At the time, the term "scat" had yet to become popular.

There are several tales about Dizzy Gillespie's cheeks, some of them perpetuated by Gillespie himself. The general consensus appears to be that he experienced some form of mild muscular damage while learning to play trumpet. This allegedly brought on his face to increase outward to an abnormal degree when playing.

Modern jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis called Dizzy Gillespie"a great dancer, teacher, wit and spiritual presence," writes the Los Angeles Times. It is this grace and personality, as well as the highest degree of skill and artistic flair with the trumpet, that has earned Dizzy Gillespie and face a spot alongside artists, artists and architects like Igor Stravinsky, Isaac Albéniz, Frida Kahlo, Wayne Thiebaud and Josef Franck as a Google Doodle.
