You Can't Drown My Spirit

You Can't Drown My Spirit

A Poem by Barbara Borel

I had a dream last night and you slit my throat. You stood over me as I choked on blood with an evil smile of gloat.

You only come to me when I'm dying and can't go on. When I'm low dark and vulnerable and you wish me to be gone.

But one of these days when I look in the mirror and see a monster looking back, my claws will come out my eyes will dilate and to you I will attack.

Your daily ritual of attempts to banish me never seem to quit. You can hold my head under water, but you can never drown my spirit.
