Autumn DaysA Story by Bao BaoA boy and a girl. People change, just as the seasons do.It was like all the other days before, where one girl walked home with a boy by her side. The late afternoon sun threatened to crash into the horizon, but was only obscured by frail autumn leaves. It was silent, and it has been for several weeks. “Are you cold?” the boy asked. “No,” the girl replied. “Well, today was fun, wasn’t it?” “I guess so.” “Yeah. I wish I could’ve knocked that last pin down though.” “It’s alright.” “I could’ve won you that teddy bear.” “I said it’s alright.” “But-“ “It’s alright.” “Is something wrong?” “Don’t you wish you could see the sun?” “What?” “The sun. Don’t you wish you could see it?” the girl pointed into the forest of autumn trees. “Well, we could just walk over there.” “You didn’t answer my question.” “Well, yeah. Sure. If you want to.” “That was a bad answer.” “How so?” “I don’t know…” “Well, we haven’t seen sunset in a long time. Sounds nice if we go again sometime soon. Or maybe even today.” “The trees are really pretty.” “Yeah. They are,” the girl replied. “And you look just like the leaves on the trees.” “Really? Why?” “Don’t you think so? They’re so pretty. Red and orange. Everything you’re wearing today is red and orange too.” “But all the leaves will just end up on the ground.” “Well, they’re still pretty. And they’ll grow back. Anyways, that makes them more like you.” “Maybe.” “Like … like something that will never die, or never say good-bye. Only indicating a change.” “Perhaps.” “They really are pretty leaves. BUT I don’t love them as much as I love you.” “Too bad they’re blocking the sun.” “Yeah. That’s too bad.” “Don’t you want to see the sun?” The girl asked again. © 2008 Bao BaoAuthor's Note
