Alone

I sighed as I pulled into my driveway. Another school day come and gone. Now I will do my homework eat supper and help my grandpa out in any way he needs on the farm. Typical.

‘For once I just want something different, something special and unique.’ I thought to myself.

I got out of my truck and saw the four-wheeler just sitting…all alone.

I smiled and ran towards it. I hopped on and put it into gear.

‘Not completely different but not typical.’ I thought.

I drove it into the abandon pasture by our house and kept my finger on the gas. I didn't care how fast I went. I didn't care how hard the wind hit my face. I just drove. I let the wind have control of my hair and twist it and turn it any way it pleased, occasionally making a few strands brush my cheeks. I felt the wind whip my clothes against my sides.

I slowed down and turned around to head back to the house, it had seemed like I had only been out here for a couple minutes but I knew that wouldn't be true. I smiled as I pulled back into the driveway and put it into park.

I got off and ran my fingers threw my now knotty hair. It made me smile. Something about riding a four-wheeler makes me feel so free.

I ran to the porch and ran my fingers thru our icicle wind chime.  Then I sat down on our porch swing and gently rocked back and forth.

I closed my eyes and kept rocking, back and forth, back and forth.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

I was half asleep before I knew it. As I neared falling completely asleep my phone rang in my book bag loudly. I sat up quickly and shook my head before standing up and running to my truck to retrieve it. I jumped up and reached into the window and got it.

‘Hello?’ I asked, realizing now how out of breath I was.

‘Melody?’ I heard my Grandpa’s voice.

‘Yeah?’ I asked, panting.

‘Your Grandma and I got tied up down here in the city and now your Grandma wants to stay a few more nights. I was gonna call and check and see if that was alright with you.’

‘Yeah.’ I took a deep breath. ‘Yeah, go have fun. I will still be here when you get back.’

‘You sure you’re alright though?’

‘Grandpa, you’ve only been gone for a day. You left this morning. I will be just fine.’

‘Hm.’ I could almost see him scratching his beard. ‘Well okay. If it is alright with you.’

‘Don’t worry about me Grandpa I will be just fine. Have fun with Grandma.’

He laughed. ‘Okay, I love you, Mel.’

‘Love you too.’

‘Stay safe.'

 'I will.'

~You can’t choose what stays and what fades away~ Florence Welch~

After getting off the phone with my Grandpa I went inside and started making myself a fancy dinner which included my special recipe cheesy Raman noodles and cherry coke. I sat down and channel surfed until I found some movie about a puppy dog and I forced myself to sit threw it.

It’s not that I don’t like animals, I mean I love animals, but movies about them have always seemed pointless to me. Movies in general actually, like seriously, why would you want to waste time watching some moving picture for three whole hours eating food that makes you fat? Makes no sense.

As soon as I finished eating I went to my room and opened up my blog. Not to brag or anything but I am a pretty amazing blogger. I had 200 readers within my first week. Now I am up to 3,786 and counting. I hadn't blogged in three days, which for me was a long time, I just had nothing interesting to say. Nothing too important or big had happened in my life.

I sank back into my bed and sighed.

‘I could blog about how delicious my cheesy Raman is…or how Gabe Hunter asked me out…but why do that when I could blog about the different colors and flavors of lollipops there are.’ I thought to myself. ‘No one ever thinks about these things…I mean there truly is a whole universe out there…I could blog about anything…Maybe I will just do the-‘

I heard footsteps inside the house.

I slowly sat up and then quietly laid my laptop down.

“Debbie? Jean?” I called out.

The house was silent, not a footstep, not a breath, not even the whisper the wind gives.

I started walking into hallway, turning on lights as I reached them.

No footsteps.

“Guys! This isn't funny!” I called out.

I reached the living room and still no one. I had searched the whole house and there was no one.

The footstep sound again, this time the sounded like they were coming from my room.

“H-H-Hello?” I stuttered, quieter this time.

I looked around, I was in the living room I could see the office and the kitchen and the hallway leading to my grandparents, mine, a bathroom and the guest room. I knew the sounds the house made well, and if they were regular ones I knew them but these were definitely footsteps. Almost as if for a moment I could hear breathing.

I heard footsteps in the kitchen.

I quickly looked at the kitchen and saw nothing.

I couldn't bring myself to decide what would be scarier, seeing something or someone or not seeing anything at all.

I didn't want to be scared, and I didn't want to admit to myself that I was, so I just walked over to the couch and sat down. I grabbed my fuzzy penguin blanket and curled up into a ball before turning on the T.V.

After watching hours of Full house I decided that it was probably just my head and I probably just missed being around my grandparents, after coming up with that I slowly fell asleep.
