Lack of Light

Lack of Light

A Poem by Poe Redd
"

and that's okay

"

Ahead, there is only black, forever.

                      only darkness, forever after.

Behind, a globe of light illuminates

the path that just spit Crow out,

illuminates a gravel mouth, closing.

                                      closing forever.

Crow hurls herself at the ball of light:

burning with the promise of something, maybe

knowledge if nothing else, if not a way back,

then answers: Why? Who killed Crow?

Crow hurls herself at the star-imposter,

but cannot crack the shell which is

like ice. Crow is burned and frozen.

Feathers float away as ashes.

Blood slows and stops as ice.

Crow falls back onto the lips

of the road, not-breathing hard.

Only black... forever?

Crow opens sad eyes to the road ahead,

eyes slitted to the light hanging above.

Light- just uncomfortable

and unforgiving, unrelenting,

just taunting, just there!

Dark. This does not mean there is

nothing but dark.

Dark hides... all the good

on the road agead.

But all the good...

is there.

Crow thrusts herself forward.

Forward! Away from the light

-the lie, calling itself Enlightenment!-

and into the black

-comfortable, quiet, soothing-

of the road ahead.

A new time period begins.

Now rise Crow, rise!

Pain, hope, confidence is what I felt reading this. :) It's a statement of self, and I like it.

This poem has the power to open up old wounds....well not exactly open up old wounds, but force us to acknowledge wounds that have been been blocked from our memories because we are functional. You tapped into such a vulnerable aspect of being a human with flaws who has to open up their heart with a certain level of trust and understanding in order to become more than who they are. It's probably one of the most interesting things in the world to see who these gambles turn us into. This poem really gets into the heart, mind and soul. Very dark, but courageous story.
