Defining Greatness

Defining Greatness

A Poem by Ralphy
"

The secret behind us

"

Defining greatness

Edgar Allan Poe, with his
mysterious personality
wrote the type of poetry
that blows a person’s mind away
his greatness stemmed from his sadness within,
bursting out in words of doubt
entertaining us in a light of dim…
but that’s not what he really did.

Edna St. Vincent Millay
was entirely different
her non-conventional type of style
fused together with modern times
drove her far into new heights
claiming fame and fortune was hers from writes
her passion ignited through and through
but that’s not what she really did.

Louise Bogon
took a different route
wrote poetry in a hazy light
her childhood distorted
her mind unsure
she got her start by reading reviews
something that many of us do
and cropped new ways to see her life
by writing passionately from the heart
with a style of beauty contained in art
But that’s not what she really did.

Poetry, that form of expression
gives us all an emotional tie
that links us together in a world of lessons
to find a way for our minds to fly

A Great poet is not what you might think
who has a mighty pen dipping in ink
that waves the hand to paint the canvas
whose fewer words do not give you less,
simple words, and visions, inspire your soul
to dig a little deeper, for your quest in gold...
a great poet for I know many, for they read today,
writingback with much to say.

While sadness was an element to Poe's writing he was also a master at writing poetic forms. For instance "The Raven," is written in iambic octameter. So along with his intense emotions he was also completely capable of crafting brilliantly formed and structured poetry and stories. The same is said for the other poets you mention since those who break rules have to be educated about them first. Great writers do more than just write from the heart since anyone who posts poems on websites or blogs can easily do that. Great writers take those emotions and simple words and imbue then with greatness because of the ability to do so with the skill and craft, and yes grammar. The ability to do all of that and create writing that enthralls readers long after their deaths is what makes a great writer great. Btw you might want to run this through grammar check on your word processor you have some things that are off like "that blow a person's mind away." Blow should be blows, etc. :)

My favorite is Dylan Thomas...in fact I like his work so well that I named my son after him *smiles*
Dylan being his first name and Thomas being his middle.
Yeah I am a little strange~

First off a big Poe fan...

so true that we all all the same in being artist but we all have our own unique styles... we can release our feelings and show others they are not alone... or bring a small amount of joy and even bring lessons of life... poetry is a great art that needs more recognition... as e paint pictures with words.

I salute all the great poets i have meet here.

You touch on a universal truth with educators here as well as poets and philosophers; they seek not only to teach or entertain but also to inspire; to stir the imaginations and the inquisitive nature of others. True talent is like faith or love that way; no matter how much one spreads it around, it never diminishes but only grows and returns stronger with every gift. Like the nod to some great poets here as well.
