An uninvited GuestA Story by RalphyWhat a laspe of time can do
Days after talking to the county about the storm ditch, I’m still waiting for the special assistance that is required to move the thousands of gallons of colored water that has taken up residences on my property. My property is a corner lot with a perimeter of more than 600 feet.
Why does everything take millenniums to get the required actions done, or is this a perplexing question, biased and self centered? The ditch doesn’t drain, so what’s the problem?
Self centered, hmmm. I think there might be a buzz to it, but my concern if far great that just my ego. Those storm ditches are deep, about 3 or 4 feet wide. That equates to a large amount of water, and it just sits there; does sing, maybe waves(corny sense of humor), but that’s all. Soon, a warming spell will breed mosquitoes that surely will syringe hefty amounts of blood out of my body. I dread those tiny little bumps that graphically plot each vein in a well sculptured body. In the right light, those bumps could look like the night sky as long as the moon resides on the other side.
Quack, quack echoed from my ditch; oh please say it isn’t so. I didn't just hear a quack. Please tell me I didn't just hear that. My eye peered towards the sound, this can’t be. It’s spring, and a quacking duck means I’m going to be a grandpa. Thinking hastily again, but I’m sure of it. The male duck is quite colorful. He has a beautiful head tattoo. His colors are forest green, with a touch of blue and red with a yellow beak. A white collar with a gray base and is missing one webfoot. The female is a two-tone, tan with a touch of white, and seems to be settling in for a long stay.
My newly filled canal travels all rounds the property, but this cute couple spends most of the time swimming in the front. Although I have not name them yet, really don’t want to either, he is kind of funny to watch. He loves to swim, and with one leg, he does so better than me. But when he’s on land he hops like a rabbit, which brings a rather pale question to mind. What will he do when the cats come by, and how come he's still alive? Oh that’s right he flies too.
Although I love the wonders of nature and the serenity of spring, I never invited this adorable couple to reside on my property. One of my neighbors brought up a good point, he said, “how do you know they plan to take up residence?”
I looked at him with a smile and said “I think it was the large suitcases lodged between his yellow beak.”
I wonder if the county will come and empty the ditch and if so will they relocate my new family?
