CRACK OF DAWN

CRACK OF DAWN

A Poem by Ja

CRACK OF DAWN

When I was young

In my late teens

I found out

What early morning means

My oldest brother, Jim

Had just brewed some wine

And my friend Hank and I

Both had a little time

We decided we should visit

And try a little bit

Hoping he would share

A glass or two of it

As we both arrived

My brother Dick did too

Soon we all par took

In sampling the brew

Well, I do not remember

How much of it I drank

But this I know for sure

My mind, was soon a blank

Not a thing comes to my mind

Until I was awoke

And staggered out the door

To have myself a smoke

There, on the porch

The three of them just sat

Sipping on that wine

Having quite the chat

It was barely dark

A dense mist hanging low

And off, in the horizon

The sun, showed its pale glow

I could not sit down

Because, there was no place

So I leaned upon the railing

And looked out, into space

My mind it was not clear

In a sort of haze

Like I had not yet slept

But been awake, for days

But morning was a dawning

Around us was this hush

And all that I could feel

Was my face, begin to blush

And that’s when it happened

While it was so serene

A more explosive moment

I, have never seen

At first there was, this

Rumbling, painful, groan

As if the earth

Had just begun to moan

Then, this loud

And thunderous “CRACK”

I tell you true

It set me back

The roar just seemed

To resonate

From underground

Did emanate

Beneath my feet

I felt the sound

As it passed by me

Outward bound

And then the mist

Did at me race

And with that shock wave

Hit my face

While on the horizon

The sun burst through

Shooting beams of light

In their blazing hue

I was amazed

I was in awe

I asked the rest

What I just saw

They all three

Seemed, nonchalant

Like, what in the world

Did I want

“The earth has just”

“The sun’s warmth drawn”

“And so you heard”

“THE CRACK OF DAWN”

“The ground warms up”

“And cracks apart”

“You must not be”

“So very smart”

They all chuckled

And had some fun

At what the earth

Had to me done

And I was left

To stare and gaze

As these events

Did me amaze

For years there after

As dawn drew near

I’d wake and wait

So I could hear

The earth’s crust crack

That “CRACK OF DAWN”

Or was this all

Just, one big con

I to this day

Don’t know for sure

If it’s all true

It’s such a blur

And this whole story

Could be bunk

Cause at the time

I was still, drunk

DRINK RESPONSIBLY, MY FRIENDS

THAT DRUNKEN STUPOR, AT SOME POINT ENDS
