DENIAL

DENIAL

A Story by Titilayo Sarah Eguridu

Short story

"

Who invented parties???
They are so overrated!
Where is Bae when I need my frayed nerves soothed?
There he is!
I wonder what’s up with him.He hasn’t said a word to me in two days.
I guess he’s in one of his regular dark moods.
Wait! I see him! I see the trace of a smile flirting around his lips.
I haven’t seen any of those smiles in ages.
…Suddenly his head swoops down to claim a kiss from a bony looking but pretty female.
My brain is frozen in time…
I retreat hurriedly , my heart is beating faster and harder than an African Shakara drum.
My heart is at war with my feet…
Should I return or keep running???
I am sobbing uncontrollably, embarrassed ,tears slide from my eyes in torrents.
I whisper to my self…
It can’t be! It’s not him!
I have the instincts of a bloodhound!
As I wrestle to gain composure,
he swaggers towards me with hands in his pockets and says in a nonchalant voice…
I am so sorry you saw that,
I have been trying to tell you for months!!!

what an enraging narrative. i feel very sorry for the persona, the way she was cheated on. it's not right at all.
yet you told it very well. the opening line was got the reader intrigued. then there is a build-up before the big revelation. the action that follows got the heart-racing and we really feel what the persona is going through. the final line is a great point to conclude the story. there was obviously a lot that happened which needs be explained, but the reader does not know. this is a masterclass in plot structure.
always enjoy your work and i am impressed by how many topics you write about. looking forward to more.

Sometimes denial is the first reaction to bad news. Unfortunately, it doesn't make the bad news good. Non=resistance is a priceless tool in such situations.

You are right…
The trick to getting over it is to barrel through
Wow, what an ending! I really like how you spoke volumes and wrote a picture of a thousand words in less. I could feel things in it in no time and again the ending was sad but powerful. tyfs
