THE BLEEDING HEART

THE BLEEDING HEART

A Poem by Titilayo Sarah Eguridu
"

Lamentation

"
My heart is heavy
It bleeds
It’s hurt
I am a mother first
No mother wishes to see her children dead
Every mother celebrates each milestone her child achieves
Because she anticipates the growth of those tiny hands
Hands that would eventually grow strong enough to lift her frail body
...someday.
Nigeria weeps daily...
As the blood of her children paint her streets
Who would assuage her tears in the future?
Who would carry on her heritage?
When the very fathers that birth the children
Become vampires
Mindlessly snuffing out life from innocent souls
The ones they swore to protect
...just like Judas
...they sold out their progeny
...to become escorts to the very ones they ought to apprehend
I weep for this country,
I weep for the lost souls,
I weep for the children yet to be born
What awaits them?
Should we continue in  sin for grace to abound?
My pen bleeds...
#End SARS

The poet here seems to be lamenting the abuses of SARS, a Nigerian police unit that was originally instituted to combat crime, but which has amassed a record of human rights violations. One can feel the speaker's deep sorrow and outrage at the situation, not only because it is occurring, but also at a sense of helplessness in the face of state tyranny. Sometimes the road to resolution can get extremely rocky.

Your description of this poem is on point! Powerful write. It's sad what's going on in the world. Your feelings are as vivid as imagery. So wonderfully explained and expressed, Titilayo. tyfs
