YOU ARE LOVED

YOU ARE LOVED

A Poem by Titilayo Sarah Eguridu

How could you feel inconsequential?
How could you feel unloved?
I carved every bone in your body and lovingly pieced them together with architectural precision.

I designed the colorful networks of your veins and muscles.
Child! How can you doubt my love for you?
You are my masterpiece!
I specially designed the spiral shape of your DNA.
...it’s bespoke!

Don’t get me started on your skin.
I chose the perfect hue for you.
It was never meant to be a means of identification.
To my utter amazement and disappointment,
...some people think their skin hue makes them superior.
That was never my intention!
All men are equal...that’s why I painted your insides the same color!

I gave you different hair texture,
To show case the uniqueness of different crowns.
Child please! discard your doubts.
It saddens me when you allow people’s actions, insecurities, and failures to eclipse the intensity of my love for you.

Before I formed thee in the belly...
I knew thee.
The depth of my love for you is incomprehensible and indescribable!
I am not some twisted misguided figment of human imagination!
I am God!
I was intentional about creating you!
I blessed the day I created you!
You are loved

that gave me goosebumps! it was such an ingenious blend of the personal, the political, and the metaphysical. that a mother loves her child unconditionally is the greatest thing to ever happen on earth. that racism still exists today is terrible, and that a mother cannot protect her child from it is gut-wrenching. yet, love conquers hate, love triumphs over everything. and a mother's love is Godly. this was profound writing that worked on many levels. i am blown away.

Hmm, as a non-christian I did feel the flow in this and if you are trying to convince others to become Christians, you are doing a good job. I may look into it someday because of this poem. I hope you keep writing and Happy Thanksgiving!

I really like how you started this with a series of questions, it drew me deeper and deeper into this passionate write. I love how you limned your love for your child in much detail and poetry. I like how it shows how a woman could possibly feel when they become a mother. God teaches you how to create. The idea that a child could believe that you don't love them is powerful and your reply is outstanding simply because it shows the process meant something to you. It's amazing how it could mean nothing to many women. But not you, which is even more amazing because it shows how beautifully rare your love is! tyfs

Dear Cyprian,
I’m deeply honored and thankful for the review.

Thank you
A fine conversational poem, Titilayo. I liked how the poem touched on various important points on the creation of a child that have social impacts on the life of the child ahead, such as race, colour creed. Like the child is being created and gifted all the positive attributes and words of wisdom and encouragement to grow to live a life of worth. I began to read the poem as a conversation between a mother and her child until it became obvious it was coming from God himself. Your final line is something I am sure He said to all of us when we were breathed into life. It's a touching poem, one full of morals and optimism. 💛
