Flowers For Mama

Flowers For Mama

A Poem by Brad

The pink coat and yellow hat careen back and forth over the path

My little duck, giggling, searching for dandelions

Announcing her finds, bringing them to me for safekeeping

Not weeds today, they are flowers for mama

This is just so sweet. And it has an honesty about it that is both touching and refreshing. As a young boy I often picked wildflowers for my own mom, daisies, dandelions, violets or tiger lilies from the creek bank. She always made such a big fuss over them, cutting the stems and putting them in vases. Only years later did I understand that was her way of showing appreciation for my love.

Yes. I think the Peace Corps had it wrong. Parenting is the toughest job you'll ever love. ;)

Having never had kids, I am scared shitless to try to write something related to kids & this poem is why. I know I'll never capture it like this. When one selects a few perfect details as you've done, you paint a huge tapestry in so few words. This provokes the total feel of a bobbing child in the garden, excited to bring flowers to mom . . . it has all the excitement of the old familiar refrain: "Mom! Look! Mom! Watch" as a child is doing something new. Your poem evokes so much! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
