Ellis's Colossus

Ellis's Colossus

A Poem by Brad

A trail of tears connects every corner of the land

Smallpox blankets and massacres with names

200 years of original sin, whose insidious echoes reverberate still

A nation of immigrants, a melting pot

With each new wave of the dispossessed, seeking the hope we claim

Finding only fear and hostility from those that came before

Internment camps from a world at war, that were never to be again

Are born anew on the Rio Grande

“This is different!” is ever the National Anthem

And Ellis’s Colossus stares blindly out to Sea

I used to live near her...yes, the symbol of liberty for all....freedom for all...but as you express so strongly in your poem...the ones who came before try to keep out the ones who come next...and so on and so on.

and when we first came here...the Native Americans were kind...so we started slaughtering them, taking their lands and putting them on crappy bits of turf.
ugh
I hear you on this one.
