The Seagull

The Seagull

A Poem by B. E. Ashley

The Seagull

I was sitting by the shore,
silently watching a seagull
Carefully she prepared for flight.
She ruffled her feathers,
then stretched her wings.
Suddenly she freed herself from earth's cage,
soaring on unseen currents.
Her shadow floated gracefully over a
blue-green sea, darting amongst the waves.
So very small I feel.
Here is the ocean,
the sky,
and me,
A speck upon earth's surface,
a dot in the universe,
a grain of sand in the sea.
All in a moment of time.

Very powerful. I love the imagery and metaphor of the seagull. I'm a beachy person so I always appreciate such things. The overall meaning of the poem is so profound and I love how you expressed it using something in nature.

It got me thinking of that picture that shows our planet from space. Against the vastness of space we are but a pale blue dot.

I love this poem about a seagull. Just in of itself it creates
a beautiful picture of being at the beach. I like being at the beach
and watching the seagulls and hearing their voices. The meaing behind the poem
comes across very powerfully as well. Wonderful poem!
