I heard recently of a theory that the Earth itself has a purpose, and it brought life about to fulfill whatever its goals are... we are the builders, we build the things that the Earth needs. This poem made me think of that... endlessly working within a pattern, the individual grains don't matter, but the end of the pattern we see the worth of everything.

So in other words, individuals are like grains of sand and all of them together make up the beach... That's interesting.
I used to think that human life was merely rain over the river... Birth in the cloud, death on impact and life... Life just that brief period you're falling. While still in the air it's easy to tell individual drops from one another, but once they hit... It's all just water.
speechless. amazing, great poem.
"we are the shore of something great" > amazing wisdom within such image.

I humbly accept your praise. Thank you so much Amber. You are an inspiration!
Love the analogy here...each grain of sand makes us who we are, wet or dry, sifting or sitting contently in front of a waving ocean. The best part is, each one that falls from the top, re-gathers with those on the bottom and in about an hour's time...back up there again.

Such a sophisticated metaphor applied to equally sophisticated thought! In such few words, makes it a true talent. Looking forward to reading more of your work.

Brad,
This is a powerful short poem. The insistence that each individual grain of sand is essential to the hour glass, and then the correlation you make to the collective "we", is very profound.
Nicely done!

Thank you Richard! I really appreciate your feedback and insights. Cheers!
I enjoyed reading this and the concept put forth.. We may be life, like a river, flowing between two shores of eternity. We keep moving but the shores hold us in. But all rivers run to the sea, eventually. Then the shores become more distant, widening our horizons, as life becomes seemingly endless. It could be.
