The Truth of the Universe

The Truth of the Universe

A Poem by Brette Medb

Here he lies with broken bones

And skin that's turning from ashes to stone.

He was once all that you asked but those days have long passed

Where he tried to be what you expected him to be.

You've killed his soul, smothered his spirit

Now the darkness of night descends on the earth

And you run like terrified children to the light of the fire,

But even though you have cast him out

And his bones now rot in the cage you have wrought

He knows in his heart the truth of the universe;

Darkness does not always equate to evil

Just as light does not always equate to good.

Sometimes one must submerge themselves in darkness

To find the light within their own soul.

I read this several times, and with each reading I found something deeper within the poem's meaning.

We're born in a cage or prison, as one of my favorite writers once said, and finding the means to liberating oneself from the cage is true freedom - true content. You've alluded to this in your poem, and I thank you for that.

Well done!

Fascinating concept. I enjoyed this. I never really enjoyed philosophical poetry before, but this was written in such a way that I didn't get a major headache. Nice job.

Very ambitious trying to puzzle out the truth of the universe. But I think you did an okay job. lol, just kidding, I loved the poem so it was better than okay. I especially like how it's more of a personal narrative instead of a abstract philosophical piece (which is what the title made me think it was going to be for some odd reason). I only have one suggestion and that is to revisit the line "Where he tried to be what you expected him to be."... there is nothing wrong with it but it's just a little awkward... But anyway, good work.

...I'm steeling this for my favorites O.O
