All that time I spent,
admiring her from a distance,
All that time she spent,
ignorant of my existence.
All that time I spent,
trying to ask her out.
All that time she spent,
her mind so full of doubt.
All that time I spent,
sitting on a dinner date with her.
All that time she spent,
smiling as if she were sure.
Until the waiter showed the receipt he held in hand,
and my jaw went slack.
Not for what it read,
but for what was written on the back.
A little note he’d scrawled,
On the corner of the page:
“Don’t you even dare,
she’s already engaged.”
All that time I spent…
wasted.
