So Many Things In So Little Time...A Chapter by AzariekHe's giving up the home he THOUGHT he had, with the person he THOUGHT had loved him, with the person he had taken LIES from all fourteen years of his life...“Mr. Tevynn? The Headmaster will see you now.” Shaed looked up. He had an uncertain look about his face as his mother nodded her goodbyes to him and left. He got up off of the hard chair in the hallway, dusted off his black jeans, and followed the receptionist into the AH Headmaster's office. At first, Shaed couldn't see a thing. The blinds were down and shut, leaving the door in dusty, hazy semi-darkness. Then he heard the soft click of a lamp and the appliance shed light onto the grand--however dusty--room. The walls were a deep, rich color, like one of the colors you'd see during that time just after night, but just before sunrise. The desk was of mahogany wood and intricately carved with floral patterns and animal designs, Shaed even saw a howling wolf in one of the corners. But his gaze was drawn to the figure sitting in the black leather chair, watching him. Surveying him. “You must be Shaed Tevynn, yes?” the figure questioned. Shaed
nodded.
“Yes, sir.” “It's good to meet you, Mr. Tevynn. I am Headmaster Sochron.” the school leader said. “It's a pleasure to meet you, Headmaster, sir.” Shaed replied. He was watching the headmaster warily, unsure of how to react to this--person. Sochron certainly didn't look like the frightening headmaster he had expected. Sochron was tall, yes, but his dark brown hair was streaked with gray. His dark brown eyes were framed by round wire-glasses that seemed just a bit too big; they slid down his nose, making him have to pause and push them up every now and again. But there was something that set Shaed off...some unidentifiable ability that just radiated off this person in waves. “Sit, Mr. Tevynn, we have much to talk about.” Sochron said eventually. Shaed blinked and sat down on the bench set in front of the desk, leaning back to get settled. “Mr. Tevynn, you were chosen by this school because you have a special...ability that sets you apart from others. A kind of power. We here at Acumen's High search for that power, for the people who possess it are no ordinary human beings.” Sochron said. Wait, what? Is this guy nuts? Shaed wondered. He was staring at the headmaster now, utterly bewildered. “A
special ability, sir? Um...what kind of ability?” he asked, uncertain. “I see you aren't aware of your own yet. I am speaking of Kinetics, Mr. Tevynn. Acumen's High is made up of all the Kinetics we can find. Pyrokinetics, Hydrokinetics, Aerokinetics, Geokinetics, kinetics, Mr. Tevynn. So tell me...can you control anything in nature, Mr. Tevynn? Perhaps your name, or your countenance, betrays the ability hidden inside?” Sochron asked him. “M-My name? Well...it's like, an anagram of the word “shade”. But that's only because my mom wanted to name me something unique. That's what she always told me.” Shaed said. “Your
mother? She looked to be of Vitakinetic descent...yes, the light silver
hair and soft colored eyes certainly gave something away. Are you
sure she's your mother?” Sochron asked, his eyes thoughtful. Shaed was taken aback. The question was so blunt, so out there, that he was stunned for a minute before replying. “Well of course she is! Who else would she be?” he demanded, standing suddenly. Sochron opened a drawer in his desk. The slight sound of shuffling papers reached Shaed's ears and he waited, wondering why Sochron had asked such a thing. Of course she's my mother. Of course she is. But... Then he realized something. Every time he had seen his mother and him in a mirror, they had looked so...so different. Her build was so different from his, and her silver-colored hair contrasted jarringly with his jet-black. Her unusual pink eyes were haltingly different from his own dark silver eyes. But wait...lots of people in the town had weird colored hair and eyes. He had seen so on the streets. Surely it was just something like that. But then again...he had always been so attuned with the night while she slept like a rock when the moon was up. And he had always been a log when the sun was up while she was downstairs doing endless paperwork for her job at the Adoption Agency. And then, of course, maybe his looks and attitude came from the father he had never known...? “Ah, here it is.” Sochron pulled out a fairly new-looking file. He opened it and pulled out a stack of papers, held together by a neat black clip. Shaed could have fainted when he saw the gold-embossed seal and initials on the front. He had seen it so many times when he had gone to work with his mother. On the reception desk, on the walls, on a plaque above the reception desk... “You were adopted.” Shaed had to sit down abruptly to keep from falling to the floor. “From the same
Agency your--ahem--mother works at. But, oddly, there are no
files on who your true parents are. Or your lineage.” Sochron informed him. Shaed felt like he
had just been rammed in the gut. By a bull. With boxing gloves made
of cinder blocks where his horns should have been. His eyes were wide
and his face was white. Adopted? “I'm...adopted?”
he croaked. He couldn't believe it. He wouldn't! Sochron nodded. “Yes, indeed. That woman who left you here isn't your real mother.” he said, showing him the papers. "These are your adoption papers. You were adopted." His voice was so blunt, so uncaring, Shaed almost burst into tears. Almost. “S-So...” he said softly, he had no idea what to say. “Shall we room you in the Pyrokinetics' Dorm?” Sochron asked. Shaed didn't know what that was, or where it could be, but his hurt was making way for rebellion, dispelling his hesitance. He nodded. “Then please sign this agreement paper. Ms. Tevynn already did. And don't worry about the tuition or the dorm--everything is paid for.” Sochron told him, pushing another piece of paper towards him. Shaed just grabbed the pen. He set it to the line and scrawled his signature across it: Shaed Tevynn And as he finished writing that contract, he swore he could have heard a thousand tiny voices whispering into his ears...
