Do I Frighten You?

Do I Frighten You?

A Poem by Ayla Automatic
"

Slam-poetry style anger spew.

"
People think that because I am
woman
I should not be taught to feel rage
Frightening storms of furious anger
Arguable to that of a steroid junkie
It's okay to a point
AFTER ALL
"I am only a female and am prone to mood swings". ~Says You.
But THESE mood swings
Resemble the swinging of fists crunching jaws
and weak-willed maws
and how DARE you think these claws
will lash out only *because*
I am woman?
I am understated and underwhelmed
You men think I cannot think for myself
I should Beg you
and Plead you
To fight MY battles
and soothe my feathers down
when I am upset.
AND YET
despite my temper
you still wish to perceive me
as some fragile creature
My presence is only useful
to beautify the ether
that surrounds our daily lives.
Am I just an entertaining pet
To You?
Nothing more, Nothing less?
A Woman's fury can make the trees rattle
and ground shake
with her screeches and war-whoops
Just as well as
ANY man can
But to stand
beside him in battle
eyes trained and barrel loaded
is just a ~dream~ demoted
by the lords of these "equal" times
I am not so weak.
It has been said that women
can stand
3 times more physical pain than a male
but that point becomes moot and stale
if we are never given the chance to prove it
outside of the hospital-jail.
So I ask a question
You tell me if its true
because I can be a truly angry Woman
Do I Frighten You?

Well I am by no means a feminist, but I can definitely appreciate your candor. You put this together quite eloquently, with enough sensibility to ensure it doesn't become overwhelmed with emotion, which I sense was part of what you were trying to achieve, and you pretty much specify it at the "mood swings" line. I also see your perspective as well as a male can, I took feminist anthropology courses while I was in school and gender studies was one of my focal points. I also see the gender game in the Army now on a daily basis. But anyway, this could be made into an angry song I think, with a musical accompaniment it would probably sell well with the angry death metal types. Very good job.
