Ancestor

Ancestor

A Poem by Ayanda Mteto
"

We all belive in the strange unknown to us.

"

Oh great ancestor!

What news you bring from the grave

Shake your bones; let them speak to me

Show me the way you have gone before

Let not my journey ride like a see-saw

Oh great ancestor!

Eradicate the proliferated shadows

Of my demise

Let my dreams speak your words

Give guide the life I live

Shelter my innocence like honey on a bee hive

Oh great ancestor!

They speak about you like the wind

That has gone

Show them your are alive in the grave

Potent your stance with your ponderous rave

Let your words not curse

Let them be a test

Oh great ancestor!

Bless thee, let days to come be a red-letter day.

Author's Note

Ayanda Mteto
An Ancestor is a spirit, someone who exist in a spiritual realm
Giving counsel to his family, he/she has left behind on death,
We don’t call them Ghost we are offended, by that phrase
Because we believe a ghost is wondering spirit still trapped in our realm.
The fist stanza about the bones. There are persons called
Izangoma and Iinyanga (Xhosa language-South African)
Who have a gift of sight to see the future and interpret
The message of the ancestor, by throwing small bones,
like chicken bones to decode the message from an ancestor, same like
the fortune teller with cards.
Hope you will enjoy the South African Culture.

I love the culture you bring to the reader, it's foreign and beautiful to me. I think the lines are very well put and I like the emotional consideration you put in this piece.

Hi Ayando.

there's some typos, but I REALLY like the tone of this. I like when tribal traditions find their way into poems. I felt this.
Edit it down, and you've got an amazing piece here.

Cheers!
RG
