Prisoner to Him

Prisoner to Him

A Poem by Nazereth

How love is seen, eye of beholder
From burning passions to ashes smolder
Black coals of hearts, a weight laden
Silent distress and time bade-ned

A love so light it floats away
Airy and gone, hidden in day
And burns brightly in the night
Where she sits without fight

Will she see him? See him as he is
Will he hear her? Or think of kids
Ignoring things not right in his mind
Until her love he cannot find?

Her saviour has seen the dying
And is dead himself, and crying
She hides her tears and smiles
While her laugh shatters all the while

He gets better, and then gets worse
But still is deaf and blind, of course
For her angel is weak and closed
Trapping her, without poise

And will she ever learn?
Will he ever discern
A real smile from fake
Or a secret from deepened lake
That she silently screams?

Very tender exploration of how we can sometimes enslave ourselves to another, even as it kills us to do so. Strong images and great descriptions. Loved this!

Thank you. This is one of my most recent poems, actually, based on something that had happened.
