What is it?!

To be told that you are beautiful

Although you’ve yet to brush your hair,

To be held in your sleep

And wake up in entangled messes.

To tackle the world on the chin

With the strength of two.

Being accepted unconditionally

For all your quirks and foibles

Love is all these things.

 

Love is the burning fire

Rages from one kiss

Teetering to embers

A memory of bliss.

A touch of golden sunlight

On a murky winters day,

Love is all these things.

 

Love is the tingle on the skin

From a single touch,

The exploration of another’s mind

The excitement of touching something new.

Love is the sadness and longing

When they are away.

Love is all these things.

 

An explosion of emotion

A ray of hope

Love is all these things

And hopefully, more?

Amazing! I liked how this poem successfully balanced moments of subtlety and softness with moments of passion and lust, as that really seemed to reflect the true nature of love itself. The metaphors that you described were absolutely beautiful, and made for a really fresh and unique outlook on an ageold topic. Reading this poem kind of reminded me of Allen Curnow's poem 'Time', in the sense that it was an exploration of something that we can all relate to, but not necessarily understand.
