Goodbye

Goodbye

A Poem by Awdures
"

A sonnet...

"

Sitting by the lake, as they did when they were young

Hand in hand, legs swinging off the pier, Silently

They were nineteen when they met, life was fun

Watching the sun go down they’re both in reverie.

Of the first sweet kiss they shared, their electric connection

The first dance, where he swept her off her feet,

He looks down to the lake and studies his reflection

Same grey eyes, same cheeky smile she thought was sweet

A few grey hairs are creeping in, refined he thinks

Turning to look at her, the girl he fell for all those years ago

The one he married, who bore his child. He winks

She smiles, eyes still sparkling at him moving slow,

She places her head upon his shoulder

Sometimes it’s nice, this growing older.

It's what we all want isn't it? That perfect love that lasts forever and never changes, like the same play but with aging actors. There are some wonderful elements of a life/love together here for your characters, a montage of atypical events but the way you've written this doesn't make it hackneyed or predictable. I'm a little puzzled by the title though, I was almost expecting one of them to be a ghost or about to die but there's no element of departure I'm picking up on (or maybe you just need to throw it harder as I can be desperately thick when the mood strikes me). I'd love to like this as a person who could say "that's me" - instead I love this poem in a "I wish" kind of way.
