A Morning Visit

A Morning Visit

A Story by Avia

A dog barked continuously as she brushed her teeth after waking up. She stepped out into her bedroom and searched her wardrobe for what to wear, eventually, she picked a pale pink, knee length gown embellished with sequins. Then, brushed her shoulder length hair before tying it into a bun while sitting at her dressing table.
"Moyo!" her mother called from downstairs.
" I'm almost done" she replied with a sigh and rushed down the stairs to meet her mother in the kitchen.
"Good morning mummy." she knelt briefly behind her mother who was preoccupied with the food on the fire.
"How was your sleep?" her mother asked without turning back.
"It was fine." she replied, gradually taking over the work her mother was doing.
"Mummy, do you remember what I told you yesterday about going to Aunty Biola's house?" Moyo spoke after a few minutes while stirring a pot of soup.
"Yes, I was very tired last night, but I remember. What do you want to do there?" Her mother asked, now looking questioningly at her.
"She helped me get my recommendation letter from her renowned lawyer friend and I have to go and get it from her today." Moyo replied without looking at her mother, instead continued stirring the pot of soup she was cooking.
"Okay o, just make sure that is the place you go. Go to Biola's house and come back immediately after. Do you hear me?"
"Yes mummy. The soup is ready. I'll just get a jacket and leave immediately." Moyo rushed out of the kitchen after turning off the stove.
The sky began to look dark as Moyo walked to the bus stop, but she decided that it would be unnecessary to go back home and continued on her way. The bus stopped at a bus park about forty five minutes later, leaving only a ten minute walk to her aunt's house. She alighted from the bus to be met with a light drizzle which quickly turned to a heavy downpour. Crowds ran in different directions to take shelter and Moyo considered whether to do so too, but she eventually decided to run all the way to her aunt's house.
"Who is there?" Biola asked, answering the doorbell.
"It's Moyo" Moyo replied, shouting over the sounds of the rain.
"You are soaking wet." Biola said upon seeing her niece completely drenched from the rain.
Biola let her niece in and gave her dry clothes to wear while she put the wet clothes in the washing machine. Moyo rested in the living room of her aunt's moderately furnished two bedroom apartment, occasionally walking to the window to look out at the rain. The apartment was on the second floor of the building and it gave a good view of most of the small neighborhood which consisted of many residential buildings, most of which were over a decade old housing more people in a single room than the a whole basketball team.
"Here you go." Biola said, handing Moyo a hot cup of tea.
"Thank you"
"So, why did you really come here? I don't believe what you told your mum about coming to collect a recommendation letter that I could have brought to your house." Biola started, watching her still shivering niece take a sip of tea.
Moyo sighed and looked at her aunt with an upset expression on her face, which her aunt immediately understood.
"I want to make breakfast, I assume you haven't eaten. Will you help me?" Biola said, standing to go into the kitchen.
The kitchen was silent, apart from the sounds of pots and pans along with the patter of the rain that was beginning to stop. Biola glanced at her niece who was peeling a piece of cut yam.
"How is everything going with you? You look a bit stressed" she started, trying to get her niece to talk to her.
" Everything is fine, I just have some things on my mind" Moyo replied, focused on her ongoing task.
" Please, talk to me. You know you can tell me anything" Biola said, hoping to convince her.
" Alright. Well, as of last week, I no longer have a best friend"
"What happened?"
"Tife is dating Dele now, and she didn't even tell me, I heard her telling Hope about it. After all the things she said about how I should tell Dele how I feel, she only wanted me to make a fool of myself while she went after him herself." Moyo started, getting agitated as she talked.
"Did you confront her?" Biola asked, walking back into the living room with Moyo
"She doesn't even act like she knows me anymore. I just feel bad, because I thought we were best friends. I used to tell everyone about how close we are, and I trusted her blindly. Now that I look back, it was very clear sometimes that she didn't have my best interest in mind. I was the only one who made efforts in our friendship, and all she had to do was be nice to me once in a while. She never made me feel equal to her and tried to dictate all my actions"  Moyo said very upset.
"Don't beat yourself up about it my dear, things like this happen, we just have to learn what not to do again." Biola replied, consoling her niece.
"Thank you for listening to me. I feel much better now" Moyo hugged her aunt, feeling relieved.
"Anytime my dear, you know I'm always here for you" Biola replied, glad to have helped.
They talked on about different things, until breakfast was ready, after which, Moyo bid her aunt goodbye with a bright smile, grateful to have someone who made her feel happy.
