His Doubts, Her Love

His Doubts, Her Love

A Story by Avia

The sun set after a bright day of beating down on the earth. His anger grew as he struck the wood and split it in two with the axe in his hand. He had chopped a considerable amount of wood since he had returned home that evening. His hands were covered in blisters, but he didn't feel the pain. The pain he felt was in his heart. This searing pain that threatened to tear his heart in two, accompanied by the anger that only grew each time he raised the axe to strike another piece of wood he didn't need. He was hurt, he was angry. He was dangerous.
A grey sedan pulled into the driveway. He didn't see it, but he knew the sound of the horn quite well. His eyes flared with rage. He could feel his heart beat rhythmically increase, his breaths were short and fuming. He contemplated on what to do, and decided that he would continue his obviously futile anger management exercise.
She turned off the car, turning to get a bag from the passenger's seat. Her black shoes hit the pavement and she knew in her heart, something was wrong. Locking the car door with a feeling of dread, she was scared to go inside. She moved to the back of the house and saw her husband cutting wood with all his might. She knew what this meant. He was angry, and looking at the amount of chopped wood, she guessed he had been angry for a while.
"Derek, I'm back" the woman said softly, taking small paces towards the angry muscled man chopping wood. Derek kept chopping wood and only seemed angrier with each step the woman took.
"I went to see Gaby, she is in the hospital. I wanted to see how she was doing" the woman continued to talk and move closer to Derek. She stood a few feet from him now. He was still slamming the axe into wood. She tried to reach for his shoulder though her hands were trembling terribly. Suddenly, he darted up and looked her in the eye. She was terrified, he looked angrier than he ever had.
"So you're back" he said with his voice full of anger. His eyes looked like fire. She wanted to run back into the car and drive away, but she stood where she was.
"what now? You want me to believe that you went to see Gaby? Do you think I'm stupid or something?" he roared.
"I'm telling you the truth" the woman said clearly shaking. "I'm not stupid Julia!" Derek shouted again and threw the axe to the ground.
"I know you went to see him. You were probably just with him. Mocking me." he continued shouting.
"Please Derek, calm down" Julia begged with tears streaming down her face. "I love you and you do this to me?" he said as tears rolled down his red face. He moved towards her and continued to shout at her.
"I should just-" he said as he raised his hand to hit her but couldn't.
"Your hand... Its bleeding" Julia exclaimed, taking his hands.
"Why are you pretending to care? I know you don't love me. You love him, so don't pretend" he said holding back his tears. "She kept trying to examine his hands which only made him annoyed.
"leave me" he said as he tried to push her away. She held his arms and pulled him to her. She embraced him and whispered in his ear.
"I love you Derek". All the tears he had held back began to flow. He fell on his knees and she fell with him. They sat together on the grass and she held him close to her as he cried on her shoulder.
"I love you, and i will always love you" she repeated and stroked his hair. They rocked back and forth, calming down in each other's embrace. Feeling the coolness of the night breeze sweeping away their grief.
