When I Need You and You Don't

 It's days like today-

when elevators close as you get to them

and no one has a face.

It's days like today-

when you throw your trash on the ground

just to mark your place.

It's days like today-

when you can't feel hope or comfort

in your very own bed.

It's days like today-

when no amount of effort or struggle

will make you feel ahead.

It's days like today-

when I need to be beside you

but won't wait for your call.

It's days like today-

when I come home to write these poems

and admit that I can't face it all.
