Newborn

Newborn

A Poem by Audrey Owens

Newborn
As he took from the world
Its first gift of air,
All she could think was
How even in the womb
He'd already disappointed her.

Don't worry, guys. It's mostly about a woman who had a guy's baby in hopes it would trap him into a relationship when it didn't. And I've never had a kid in my life.

I'm going to refrain from the show of concern, as that's been amply handled by the last two reviewers. In the end, I think this piece has done what any work of poetry aims to do; evoke strong feelings and emotions in its readers. And that it has done for me. The short length of the poem make the impact of this disappointment even more powerful, and the fact that this is the last line fills us with concern over what will happen next.

Ewww, this is a worry.
Sorry, I don`t know how to handle this.
Is this an unwanted pregnancy ?
Is this baby conceived in guilt ?
Is this the result of illness and despair, or
perhaps depression. See a doctor immediately .

How very sad... and not a good portent for the future. Post natal depression is fairly common, so I'm told - but only a woman would know.
