Desert Sands

Desert Sands

A Poem by Autumn Dawn Ridge

I met a strange man

who had walked many lands

He had an ancient name

That was Spartan, not Roman

He played intelligent games

and never crashed in a plane

He couldn't remember my name

but that's what happens when

passions must remain unspoken

He lead me on to be "the one"

after which everyone chases---

Never knowing I'd become

one of a legion of beautiful faces

I tried to forget him; move on

expunge from my heart

all of the delicate traces

evidence of marks, that passion imparts

that only eons and eons of time erases

He hated my poetry, my prose and my rhyme

a onerous distaste for it all, a posture unkind

I penned him some letters; he returned them all

He'd forgotten my name and refused my calls

Told me he was too busy for such frivolous things

He was over wrought with the duties of a king

No time for daydreams, moonbeams or sighs

He only saw flights of fancy in my blue eyes

Narry an hourglass escaped his attentions

Silken lace, curves and things without mention

Just all of the things that comprise a woman

For a Spartan soldier, his eyes were decidedly Roman

Ne'er a gentleman begs my departure with silence

Th'erst-while Queen of Hearts consigns poetic license

Wish I'd listened to my conscience, as I should

A wall of silence did banish me for good---

And played not Desdemona to his poor Othello

For warriors and poets make rather odd bedfellows

But let go, let go, let go or lest ye be dragged

I'd rather be beaten, shot, hung or stabbed

than be the woe begotten remnant of relived lust

Fair-weather friends are not those you can trust

Now I only dream of his golden hands

that pass by my eyes like desert sands

I am there in the desert, writing my book

As he goes on without one backwards look

time stands still through the frozen hours

recalling his remarkable strength and power

to hold clock hands forever still---

I tried to forget him with all of my will

Eternity is a long time to be filled with regret

My darling Prince---you, I will never forget

A memory moment etched on the mind and hard to erase successfully; used and discarded poetically captured within fine wordplay and stanza imagery. Reflections ,warnings and lessons to be learnt - great write - :-)
