Ember's GlowA Poem by Autumn Dawn RidgeThe perspective of Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown's wife FaithMy lover took a journey As I knew my heart would break But before departing, warned me “Do not our love foresake!”
He took a satchel full of goods to sell And left me with an empty bed Upon his return, have much to tell Before he left, this is what he said
“Light a candle in the window, My dear, and wait on my return” In his absence my heart aches And my love for him still burns So, window-perched, I waited as twilight fell across the fields skimmed a book of poems, unabated only longing thoughts did yield At length, my eyes grew weary staring into the glowing flame the rain outside grew teary against the chilly window panes
If he never comes back---- The loss was his, and not mine Forever wonder what I lacked In another place, another time
The candle wax overflows the plate All that’s left, a burned out wick To signify that it’s too late To undo wrongs and make a fix
I waited such a long, long time I’d wait for him forever---- Love knows not how to tell time Just the glowing of an ember
I see you in my dreams---- And hope you will remember That someone waits for you In the glowing of an ember
