Wanting to Forget

Wanting to Forget

A Poem by Austin_Meehan

Wanting to Forget

When that specific person calls your name

and you hope it’s not actually you,

that’s what wanting to forget feels like.

‘Cause roses are red and violets are blue,

I still have no clue why I bled and fell for you,

all I know is that I want to forget.

When they hand you pictures

taken in a different dimension,

that’s what wanting to forget feels like.

Mary had a little lamb,

she said she loved it but in the end,

she ripped it open and sacrificed it to her false god,

hoping that he’d fix her heart if she could steal somebody else’s.

When you burn every note,

that they ever wrote,

that’s what wanting to forget feels like.

The wheels on the bus go round and round,

she told me I was her ride or die,

but then the road got bumpy,

she knew I wasn’t worth getting hurt for,

and once she left,

that’s when the wheels started to fall off.

When you tear down every picture,

you two ever took together,

that’s what wanting to forget feels like.

Baa baa black sheep,

how pretty you are when you weep,

so generous, let people take from you what is yours.

Have you any love?

Yes sir, yes sir,

a whole heart full!

Some for the master,

some for the dame,

but none for the little girl who broke my heart,

and who lives down the lane.

When you hate yourself,

for still drinking and eating their favorite things,

that’s what wanting to forget feels like.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty wanted to take a great fall,

he did, but it only broke him a little bit,

and now, not even all the king’s men could fix him.

When even though you’ve gone through all this trouble,

they still somehow find themselves in your head,

then your conversations,

then your poetry,

and that’s what wanting to,

but not being able to,

forget feels like.
