Chapter Seven: That’s what BFFs are for “No charge.” My jaw dropped. I stared wide eyed at Johnny and then back at the record in my hand. He couldn’t be serious… “You’re kidding! You’ve got to be! I mean seriously, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Pink Floyd’s first album, signed? By all four original members of the band? You have to want something for it.” Johnny chuckled and shook his head, “No it’s free, and if your brother is anything like I am, he’ll love it.” “Of course he’ll love it! Hell I love it! As a matter of fact, I might just keep it for myself.” “Oh no, none of that,” Johnny scolded teasing. “This is a gift for your brother, not you.” I stuck my tongue out at him and shook my head in refusal, but gave in when I looked up at him, staring helplessly into his innocent eyes. “Fine…but only because you’re not charging me!” He smiled and draped an arm over my shoulders nonchalantly as we headed back towards the front of the store. I returned his smile. Partially because it was just a reflex and partially because I couldn’t help but notice how nice and comforting it was to have his arm around me. “S-c-a-n-d- to the a, to the l-o-u-s. I can't handle it, can't handle it. damn that girl she's scandalous. its time to get a 10, its how far if you bring a friend. with them crazy pre--” Leave it to my phone to ruin the moment. Shooting Johnny an apologetic look, I answered. “Ciao?” “Hey Azzurra!” Madi’s voice rang clearly through the speakers. “Oh gosh Madi, I’m sorr--” “Oh be quiet, it’s not like I’ve never left you, alone, laughing hysterically in a store before,” sarcasm sliding off her tongue, but it was playful. I sighed with relief, thankful for Madi’s easygoing personality. “Aha-ha, funny. Honestly what were you laughing at? You were practically in tears before Johnny came to help me.” “So that’s his name! Awe that’s cute! I can’t wait to meet him!” she said excitedly, completely avoiding my first question. I felt Johnny slide his arm off my shoulders. I glanced at him, thinking I had done something wrong, but he just stood there with his arms crossed, smirking. His light blue eyes dancing playfully. I blushed lightly; he must’ve heard Madi talking about him. Luckily he didn’t notice because my skin was far to dark to see such a light shade. I became very grateful for receiving my dad’s side of the family’s skin tone. My mother’s family, although all Italian like my father’s, had lighter skin. “Yes, that’s his name,” I replied watching Johnny whose smirk grew as I spoke. “Awe, I’m super happy for you Azzy! But I’d hurry up whatever you’re doing because we’ve been here for over an hour. We’re going to have to leave soon.” “Yea sure. We can go, but where are you? I don’t see you anywhere…” I walked out of the store and spun around slowly, looking for any sign of my extremely tall and blonde best friend. She was no where in sight. “I’m in Starbucks, but I’ll meet you at the car. I have to pick up my gift for Vinny on the way out.” “Okay, I’ll see you in a few.” “`kay! Love you!” “Amarla anche.” Click. I turned to find Johnny right behind me. “Oh jeeze! Wow, ha I didn’t know you were there.” His smirk was gone with a nervous smile replacing it. One hand was in his pant pocket while the other was closed, clasping onto something. “It’s cool, but I heard you gotta leave,” he said sounding a little bummed. I nodded. “Unfortunately” “So I’m guessing there’s no chance of eating lunch together, is there?” he stressed the ‘together’ part. I smiled and looked up at him. His face was full of anticipation, but he tried his best not to show it. If I hadn’t been so attracted to him, I probably wouldn’t have noticed. I thought he was cute when he was nervous. “I wish, honestly I do, but not today. Madi, the other girl I was with, wants to eat lunch at school, and I’m her ride. Another day would be good though…” His face which had fallen quite rapidly began to glow. “Awesome! Uh, here’s my number. Just call whenever, I like spontaneous outings.” He winked and handed me the paper that was in his hand. I giggled and folded the paper before placing it in my pocket. “Great, I’ll call you later then.” He gave me another one of his gorgeous smiles, and much to my surprise, a quick hug. Some people might have found it awkward, but I found it to be the complete opposite. “Oh one more thing, if I don’t answer my phone, I’m probably out surfing or something, so don’t be offended if I get to it a little late.” “No problem,” I said smiling at him one last time before walking away with my brother’s new gift in hand.
“You got his number?!” “Honestly Mads, is it necessary to repeat everything I just said?”
Her words flowed through my brain. In a sense she was right, I had been spending a lot of time helping Kindall or Madi with their boy problems or any other problem in general. Maybe it was time for a little change. We parked the car and headed straight for the cafeteria. Fourth period ended around five minutes ago, so everyone should’ve gone down to lunch by now. The whole way there Madi continued to gush over my new ‘crush’ as she put it. She was in the middle of evaluating his hotness level when I interrupted. “Hey Mads? You never told me why you were giggling out of control in the store.” Madi’s smile widened. I could’ve sworn the ends of her mouth were touching her eyes. “I knew he was coming over.” “You knew who was coming over? Wait, you mean Johnny?” She nodded her head violently, obviously pleased that she had caught something I hadn’t. Her eyes glistened with sheer joy. “His friend, you know the short one with the red hair, freckles, and pale skin?” “Uhh…no?” “He was working the cashier, oh! I forgot you were facing towards me not them. Ha, that’s okay he’s not very important.” I sighed. “Madi…you’re rambling again. She smiled cheekily. It was a bad habit of hers, but we were working on it. “Anyways, I watched them the whole time you were looking through the racks and so on. I was surprised you didn’t feel their stares. Like seriously Az, it was full on eye balling. And then the red head nudged Johnny, and then Johnny punched him back. In less then like five minutes they were having a quiet wrestling match!” “You would find that funny.” “It was! Honest! Johnny nailed the ginger boy right in the stomach and he backed up into a mannequin! I’m surprised you didn’t hear them, they weren’t very good at being quiet at all.” I chuckled lightly. Okay so maybe it was a bit funny, but not as funny as she made it seem in the store. “You still don’t beli--” “Hey guys!” a voice yelled, cutting off Madi. We didn’t even have time to turn around when a pair of arms embraced us both. They were very pale, and the hands had fingernails that were painted a dark maroon which meant it could be only one person. “KINDALL!” Madi said just as loud. “We’ve got so much to tell you!” “Duh. I haven’t seen Azzurra all weekend AND all this morning! Where were you anyways? Science was such a drag. I had to listen to Madi talk about Josh the entire time.” Madi blushed furiously and then pushed Kindall lightly. “Was not! Don’t listen to her Azzy. She’s obviously lying.” “Am not! I even have proof! Here, look at this!” Kindall dangled a piece of scrappy notebook paper in my face, but quickly let go as Madi began to chase her down the hallway. I watched as the two of them shrieked and giggled while running from one another. They had been friends long before I ever moved to “Azzy! He-help!” Kindall cried. Madi had her trapped in a corner and was now tickling her so much that tears started streaming down her pale face. I knew better. “No thank you. I’m fine watching, but thanks for inviting me.” Kindall attempted to reply, but it was hard to understand her do to her crying fits of laughter. Madi finally grew tired and stopped, leaving Kindall curled up in a ball panting on the carpet floor. After a couple of minutes she slowly moved into a kneeling position still clutching her stomach. Her short auburn hair was sticking out in odd places; her thick eyeliner was smudge all over her cheeks, and her simple light brown eyes still had some water left in them. “Y-you g-gu-guys s-suck-k.” “Oh come on Kenny,” I said as I offered to help her up, “we’ve all had it happen to us before. If I remember correctly, you both put shaving cream in my Converse two weeks ago, and they still smell.” Kindall and Madi laughed. I fought off a grimace in order to keep the tension under control. I didn’t want to have to sit through lunch while a glaring contest was taking place. Those were never fun. “S-c-a-n-d- to the a, to the l-o-u-s. I can't handle it, can't handle it. damn that girl she's scandalous. “S-c-a-n-d- to the a, to the l-o-u-s. I can't handle it, can't handle it. damn that girl she's scandalous.” I glared at my pocket. “You have got to be kidding me…” © 2009 -Aurelia MirellaAuthor's Note
