In the early morning mists
I saw it
Floating in the glimmery dawn
Through the Plexiglas
The ghostly-forested hilltop
Wavered above and amid the metal structures
Some towering giants
Some resembling aboriginal burial platforms
A complex of metal, glass and concrete
Erected to enslave one of natures forces
To the will of Man
Once the forested hilltop stood
The wind blowing through the trees
The only sound to break
The ancient silence of the wilderness
Once deer trails wove over and around
The hill and streams of clear water
Flowed and chuckled between the trees
And then it was gone…
The hill was leveled for this maze
Of metal and pavement
Roads and trenches cut through and over the hills
Silence and whispering wind
Was replaced by the mind-splitting
Hum of cars and transformers
But in the early morning light
Look carefully through the Plexiglas
Train your hearing to find the whispering wind
And you will perceive what once was

Yes, the whisperings of what once was--sometimes I can hear them, too. In many cases, I remember how the land once was from long ago, and feel sad that man had to replace nature's perfect artistry with something to serve his selfish needs. Calls to mind the words of Joni Mitchell, "Don't it always seem to go, you don't know what you've got till its gone..."
