Author's Note

Mother Maggie
Through white stillness
your silent footsteps fall
as I track you across
the snow covered wastes

Your forest realm
smaller than it once was
I wonder…
are you still there
am I tracking you
in this world of frozen wooden columns
or a shadow—an impression
left behind

Do I see you…?
your stripes blend—fade into
the dark cold forest
Do I see you…?
Savage king striding alone
Do I see you…?
Graceful Queen—children trailing
in court

Silent forest—silent footfalls
Ghosts in the frozen wastes
soundless shadows
majestic, regal, precious
in your feline glory
your presence a gift
squandered, desecrated, dishonored

I see you now
my brothers, my sisters
I watch your progress
you ascend to the stars
from this poorer plane
the world pales
at your passing

Skillful use of repetition! I love how "Did I see you?" becomes "I see you now" in the last stanza.
