PrologueA Chapter by Gold D. RadiumA college student with no idea what she wants out of life stumbles upon a dragon egg while out hiking. With no idea how to hatch or raise a dragon, she turns to Twitter for help. She hesitated with her cursor of the ‘Tweet’ button, deciding if it was worth sharing. She didn’t have many followers; mostly old friends from high school she no longer spoke to, and the occasional college acquaintance. Finally, deciding it didn’t really matter either way, she clicked.
11:22 AM - 17 July 2014 @jacinthrunner Tweeted: “Found this cool looking rock while hiking today.instagram.com/p/xZgkJPNBXg/“
The attached photo showed an oval, grey rock. It was rough with little black bumps scattered across it, and had blended in well with the rest of the terrain. She debated for a few minutes whether she wanted to carry her find all the way back down the mountain with her, but eventually broke down and grabbed it.
Satisfied with her Tweet, she stood from her computer to take a quick shower and change into comfortable clothes. She didn’t have any other plans for the day, as she had no classes to attend during the summer months and was still in the process of looking for a job.
Jacinth Runner was a fourth year college student with no idea what she wanted to do with her life. In a world wrought with possibilities, she was lost. Unlike her sister, she had no magical talent. Her parents had been a little disappointed with her lack of magic, but assured her there were many other opportunities waiting for her. They suggested alchemy, or potion brewing, but she was hopeless with chemistry. They put her in drawing lessons early on, hoping she might one day get a job as a rune artist, but she could barely draw a straight line, let alone the intricacies involved in rune magic.
Eventually her parents gave up on trying to find something she would be good at, settling for sending her to college in hopes of her getting a degree in anything that would get her a good career. So far, nothing had jumped out at her.
She dabbled briefly in English, but found she didn’t have the eloquence for poetry or spell making. History had some potential with its many different branches, but her first trip to a museum ended with her getting kicked out after trying to touch one too many magical artifacts. Science was a contender, the field quickly evolving thanks to those born with no magical abilities, but finding ways to create their own kind of magic. Unfortunately, she couldn’t stand being in a lab for hours on end, staring at screens of numbers and struggling with the mathematics.
This left her undeclared, taking whatever course caught her interest.
