The Golden Valley
The clocks struck midnight
But my eyes still gazed afar
At the snowy stars,
Lounging high in the evening sky.
I grabbed my coat and walked
Down empty moonlit streets
Till I saw a girl
Painting seasons with her hands.
My balance failed
When I gazed upon her eyes like wild fire
And she smiled at me and took my hand
And whispered in my ears:
Let me take you down
To the golden valley high up in the clouds
Where the soldiers sleep and parted lovers
Kiss without a sound.
But I’m sailing in the morning, love,
To old and new frontiers
So if you’ll wait just for a while
Then I’ll come back when I’ve seen a few more years.
We rode a taxi
Through the blue October night
Till the stars took flight
And the moon began to swoon
I bid adieu and turned to leave
Without a trace,
But I felt a pair of arms
Restrain me back
Our eyes they met
And I saw her longing lips like age old wine,
And my knees got weak when she turned to me
And asked me once again:
Let me take you down
To the golden valley high up in the clouds
Where the prophets sing and poets speak
Of lovers lost and found.
But I’m sailing in the morning, love,
I said to her with tears,
But if you’ll wait just for a while
Then I’ll come back when I’ve seen a few more years.
Several winters passed
And now I’m back in town
With my hands holding a glass of wine
And the weight of a wedding gown
But when I found her wooden doorstep
On the ancient avenue,
All I found was a wrinkled note
Filled with broken words and one misplaced adieu
Well as the dawn begins to glow like candle fire,
I’ll be dreaming of that gentle girl
And how she begged me once:
Let me take you down
To the golden valley high up in the clouds
Where the prophets sing and poets speak
Of lovers lost and found.
If only I had never sailed, I thought,
To old and new frontiers,
For my love has flown to distant lands
And left me here to live a lonesome year.
