Binary RevelationA Story by Xanthous Crow001 1011. (Escape.)
Gary sat behind the screen of his computer. He was a young man, upon sight of him one could estimate his age to be his early or mid twenties, but his handsomeness was warped by unshaven features, heavy bags under the eyes and a generally unhygienic appearance. Around lay several sheaves of paper, carelessly strewn about, mingling with empty soda cans and snack wrappers. The room was a crowded, claustrophobic one, a single room studio apartment. The computer screen was the only source of light in the place.
Gary was wearing a bathrobe. He'd been awake the past few days, glued to his computer, getting up only to use the bathroom and eat, lest he starve at his keyboard. Coffee, soda, cigarettes and whatever junk food he'd stashed away in preparation was his diet, as well as pills to help keep him up. He'd been working relentlessly on hacking into a government-run website. The hacker community that Gary belonged to had been trying to crack the firewalls and safe guards of the site for months, but to no avail. Gary liked the website he belonged to, the community of electronic and digital deviants that he called his clique of people. It was his only social outlet; he'd forsaken the "reality" world years ago, shying away from physical contact with people. His business was setting up, maintaining and creating websites for people, all the contact made was online. On the side, he did "professional" hacking; people hired him for hacked information or files and he delivered. And for the past few weeks, Gary watched the hacker forums lament on the difficulty of the one particular site, the One That Got Away, as they called it. These were people who were serious tech-heads and had been hacking for years, many have been hacking before Gary could even walk, and even they couldn't breach the impregnable defenses of the bastion. But Gary was determined to try. He wanted to make a name for himself; Gary Green, Hacker Extraordinaire, the One who Impregnated the Impregnable.... no, wait..... So he had been at it relentlessly, using every trick in the book. And when they didn't work, he tirelessly wrote his own malicious code and script. Today would be the test run. He booted up his secondary computer, readied the code, ran the script and from his primary computer accessed the government website, some CIA databank or some other. Once he was on, he set his script to overdrive and launched his malicious code - his worm that he lovingly dubbed "Irving". The screen of his primary computer flickered and the site crashed near instantly. He couldn't believe it. He was in! He began to type, trying to bring up information or files from the site. The computer accepted the command but gave him nothing. When he tried again, the screen went black. Gary swore and kicked his desk, then swore again. He pressed CTRL, ALT, ESC and tapped the ESC button several times. The screen flashed but still remained dark. He looked to his secondary laptop, to try and salvage it from there, but that screen was blank, too. Then, a string of numbers - one's and zero's - became present on the main computer's screen. He squinted. Binary? He read the numbers and translated it in his head: I. SEE. YOU. Gary pressed ESC again, trying to get rid of the binary message. Then came a loud pounding on his door. © 2012 Xanthous Crow
