Ultramarine

Ultramarine

A Poem by Xanthous Crow

Here we sit
Atop a sea of green
Beneath an ocean of ultramarine - black
Studded with faint points of white
Are those stars we see?
Or are they fireflies
Maybe airplanes distorting the dreams
Of young watchers
Ferrying weary travelers somewhere far away
And exotic

I dream of those far-off places
Do you?
Of meeting new people and seeing new places
Do you?
I dream of letting these new colors seep into the canvas of my soul
I wonder
Do you?

You say you can read these stars
Horoscopy, divination by constellations
A sprawling map above us
Speaking of mysteries so ancient that they are
Unfathomable
We see Orion, with eye of red and the other of blue
String his bow in pursuit of the monster Scorpio
Can you see our fates in those stars?
Mingling with galaxies far, far, far away
Our fates, hazy unknowns

I dream of love, lasting forever, eternal
Do you?
Forging bonds and connections that last until we're old and wrinkled
Do you?
I dream and ponder and worry about the future, whatever it may bring, good or ill
I know
You do
