Speaking of Sea-Beasts

Speaking of Sea-Beasts

A Poem by Xanthous Crow

Into the deeps I go
Downwards, downwards
The realm of the whale
And the mermaids, too
Rare and elusive
With shells in their hair

Down I go
Into the realm of
Crystal blues and sandy browns
And deepest black
Where small things, big things
With glowing lures alluring
And bulging eyes dwell
Untouched by sun's caress

Deeper I sink
Drowning
As sea serpents and giant squids
Battle around me
Tentacles and long fins unfurling
While the sea naiads sing to me
Their sunken songs

Upon the shore I sit
Worn and wasted
Upon bone-bleached sand
Long dried under oppressive sun
I watch the mighty waves rise and fall and wonder
Why can't I go beneath those waves
To the court of regal, grim Neptune
Or swim with fish?

I feel this every time I see any body of water. Great work.
