Voir Dire

Voir Dire

A Poem by Frank F. Atanacio
"

to see to say....

"

Emotions came into play,

he turned to look at photos of the murdered boy,

stares for a moment, then he turns away,

the rest of the day

was spent on the selection of a jury,

trying to ignore his heart filled with fury,

voir dire,

the elaborate process

by which potential jurors are screened

for bias by the court,

sometimes this was a murderer’s dream,

hoping stupidity was left after the sort,

voir dire,

prosecutors using their limited number of strikes,

to keep out those potential jurors with dislikes,

some who have been beaten by police,

those who don’t give a damn,

or generally reject the criminal system,

and calls the court system a sham,

others with no reason or rhyme,

but at the same time,

the defense attorney’s endeavors

to use his strikes to remove his share

on the drop of a dime,

he would make it clear,

all who are related to law enforcement officers,

of those who were victims of a crime,

and the man seated at the defense table,

accused of a crime must be guilty,

no tale, no fable,

voir dire, the only way,

to see, to say.
