Fifth Amendment Right

Fifth Amendment Right

A Poem by Frank F. Atanacio
"

The Fifth Amendment Right

"

Eyes shifted,

trust lifted,

he was offered no respect,

as he was treated like a suspect,

the judge was sustaining, the prosecutors complaining,

justice straining,

it wasn’t perjury,

he knew who’d take the fall,

so he read a brief statement to the grand jury,

he wasn’t offered immunity by the prosecutors,

so he had his back up against the wall,

and subsequently walked out,

everyone did shout,

because he effectively sent the investigation

into a long, final stall,

he kept his sanity in tact,

there was no indictment, in fact,

there was only fast talking,

and an investigation walking,

the case was going to be an up-hill fight,

as everyone started invoking

their Fifth Amendment right.
