You Look at the Body

You Look at the Body

A Poem by Frank F. Atanacio
"

In order to determine the cause of death.. you look at the body

"

Standing over a cooling human corpse,

you look at the body,

as if it were some abstract work of art,

you look for reasons,

without picking it all apart,

or taking the images to heart,

you look at the body,

was it overdose,

heart attack,

gunshot wound to the back,

does he have defense wounds

on his right hand,

did he lose total command,

was he fat, or thin,

did rigor mortis set in,

was there a blood trail,

was he quiet or did he shout,

or did his life just fail,

to find out,

you look at the body.

I like the poem. A poem that allowed you become part of the poem. To look upon a new dead body and try to figure out why they are dead in a poetic form. A excellent poem. Different and very good.

Interesting yet creepy I loved it. Its not emotional and thats what intigues me about this piece and certain serial killers . These are questions that only certain people can ask ,detectives , medical examiners and so on . Lovely write

interesting...it's true...once the life has gone...what is a human body, but an amazing piece of art?

at first, it must be hard for those who work with corpses and cadavers to separate the life from the shell as they work. but, over time, I imagine it just becomes a natural thing that just happens.

good poem. original substance. made me think.

Detached, yes, you should look at the body...well done!

I've always felt poetry is almost like a window to the writers true soul and emotion.. you leave the reader with such a intense impression that you are either fascinated with the reasons behind death or you are in a profession that requires such interest. Either way, it makes your work incredible. Very enjoyable read.
