Life Fell Prey

Life Fell Prey

A Poem by Frank F. Atanacio
"

Lonliness, Sadness, alone

"

It was amazingly clean of rats,

perhaps it was because of her cats,

but her body looked as if she had been

dead for days,

she was old,

weightless, and dry,

she was cold,

thin, and she’d cry,

she had no family to check in on her,

and no friends to stop on by,

she’d fall asleep hoping she’d wake no more,

but the pain from the open sores,

kept her awake and the blood from her pores,

glued her to the floor,

and she was just too weak to heal old wounds,

they would reopen and become painful too soon,

death made progress,

and she was happy about that,

but she’ll miss her pets, mostly her cats,

however her life fell prey,

to loneliness that day,

and that’s how she stayed,

even after she prayed and prayed.

You took the old woman with cats (that we all know, regardless of where we are) and showed me a side of her i never would have seen. My catlady, always seems so happy though, but perhaps that is just a false face? She's really hurting, dying, crying behind it. She took in the cats to replace her lost husband, but the pain never suibsided mayhap..

I enjoyed reading this as it opened my mind to a new perspective. a new viewpoint, that I never would have thought of without this peice. I always love it when somethign can open my mind just a little wider =) thank you

This is powerful, and I liked the description and imagery. Very well done, and well expressed.

Wow that was amazing. It felt so raw and real. I felt like I was seeing through a window into a little slice of her life. And even though It was only a very small slice when she died I felt attached and it made me feel pity for her and the life she led. Absolutely awesome. I loved it.

This allowed imagery I other wise never would have associated with the "crazy old lady down the street". How sad do just lay there and waste away knowing this was the way you would spend your last moments, alone and unable to enjoy the one being thats made you happy all this time.

One heartrending visual- No human comfort-dieing in abject loneliness abandoned by family ,friends and humanity- with only her cats to watch her passing- She died glued to the floor by her own sores and puss and prayed for someone to comfort her beside her cats- and her prayers remained unanswered-

The next time I see the neighborhood Cat Lady I'll I'll give her a warm hug

Damn good writing...
