The Middle Infielder

The Middle Infielder

A Poem by Astro Annie
"

I have a friend who plays second base but the shortstop is like a mirror twin so I generalized it. If you've ever played 2B or SS, I'd like to know if I nail this. Or if I'm leaving anything out.

"

Yes, I will cover second with their lead-off man on first.
I yawn to let my partner know it's just as we've rehearsed.
I'm standing in position when the runner starts to go
So I can be there easily to catch the catcher's throw.
Without the force, it's not enough to beat him to the bag
I need to have the ball in hand and swipe him with the tag

With runners on the corners and with one out on the board
They'd tie it up this inning if a runner safely scored
The ball's hit to my partner and I run to take my place
And on the way I catch the ball then step on second base
I jump over the runner who tries getting in my way
And fire it on to first to end the inning -- double play.

I sometimes catch it on the bounce and sometimes on the fly
I sometimes make the diving grab but sometimes it gets by
The dirt stains on my uniform I wear with greatest pride
I maybe didn't get the ball but you can tell I tried.
And if the ball does go on through, the throw should come my way
I choose if I should cut it off or try to make the play
