Settling in

"

The room was surprising yet completely unsurprising. It was medium sized, larger than my room back home, a perfect size for two teenagers. It was symmetrical in furniture, two single beds were pressed against the wall, a single window was in the middle of the back wall. There were desks facing the side walls on the end of both beds and matching ebony drawers next to those, with mirrors hung above them. There was a vast space in the middle, the pale wooden floorboards were covered by a large, white faux fur rug. The right side, my side, was plain and undecorated. The left side, however, was completely personal.
The ebony desk had a white laptop open, it looked like Daisy had been writing an essay on it. The chair for the desk was draped in dresses and coats, pretty shoes were littered around it. Her bedspread was white, like mine, but it was covered in colourful pillows, every colour of the rainbow. On the wall hung a large psychedelic patterned material, right out of the 60s. In the corner she had a white and orange ball chair. Her side overall had a very 60s vibe.
I moved to my side, literally pale in comparison, to put Sakura's cage on the bed. An impossible feat, someone had spread colourful dresses all over it.
"Oh!" Daisy squealed, rushing past me. She shovelled all of the dresses into her arms and threw them onto her desk chair, turning to smile apologetically at me.
"I can never decide what to wear in the mornings."
It was only then I took in what she was wearing, a white dress that fell mid thigh length. It had a baby pink collar, buttons and belt and it was covered in cherry blossom branches. Her wavy, pale blonde hair was pushed back with a matching baby pink headband, giving it volume. She had delicate facial features that were emphasised with minimal makeup, her bright blue eyes were framed by long lashes and her small lips were tinted rose. She looked like she had stepped right off the pages of a 60s fashion magazine. Her cheeks flushed furiously as she realised I was staring.
"I love your style, you're so pretty!" I blurted out, worried I'd offended her.
"Sorry I didn't invite your old lady in," she started, clearly reaching for a topic change. I can't believe I'd already made her uncomfortable. "She bugged out real fast. It's just I invited some friends over and I didn't know if she was a lingerer."
"Friends, as in a party?" I must admit the thought made me panic, I didn't expect to be thrown into a party on my first day.
"No, not exactly, just 4 people. I was hoping you'd like to join my group? It's not easy starting fresh." She smiled at me, but I wasn't sure if it was sympathy or kindness.
I decided to treat it as kindness, she was my room mate, possibly my first friend.
"That would be lovely."
She sat at her desk, after shoving her clothes onto her bed, and continued with her essay. I shifted my attention to my suitcases and started unpacking what little I'd brought.
I had unpacked most of it, hung up my poster of a fantasy version of space, and had just finished arranging my wardrobe of jumpers and black jeans, when Daisy squealed again.
"Oh! I'd forgot!" She jumped up and shoved a slip of paper into my hand.
"Your timetable! I hope you don't mind, I looked at it myself! We have psychology together, with my friend Skye too, our friend soon and social studies with Aurel, I'll introduce you to her tonight you also have english lit with Aurel and your chosen language, French was it, with Aurel and Jasper," she gushed. I blinked at her, I remembered picking those subjects but where was maths and science? I didn't pick them specially but surely they were mandatory? But the time table agreed with Daisy, no maths or science was listed. Daisy watched my confusion, quickly catching on.
"Oh yes no mandatory subjects. Well, remember when you had to get in, you took a test mainly on maths and science. This school is more of a practical school, you have to be really smart to get in, and on the test you showed you could already do maths and science to a high level. Our headmistress doesn't see the point in continuing it if you can already do it."
Before I could reply, there was a soft knock on the door, it opened as a pretty girl with black hair and a full fringe stuck her head round it.
"Daisy? You ready?" She stepped in, not giving Daisy time to answer.
"Oh!" She widened her eyes at the sight of me. "I didn't realise you had a guest."
I waved awkwardly as Daisy chuckled, "She's no guest, Skye, this is May."
Skye smiled at me, not as warmly as Daisy smiled, but she seemed friendly enough.
"Yes, invite everyone in," Skye slipped back through the door. Daisy turned to me, "They didn't know you were coming today but I told them not to come straight away, I wanted to give you time to settle in."
"How considerate," I smiled and turned to face the door. Skye came back in, followed by 4 others.
