Heaven or Hell?

By Melisa Lynn

A girl is on an empty stage. A man with big white wings appears beside her.

Girl:

Where am I?

Light:

This is Nowhere.

Girl:

Why am I here? Why are YOU here?

Light:

I’m here to take you to Heaven.

Girl:

Why am I going to Heaven? Did I die? I don’t remember. Do `   you know how I died?

Light:

Yes. You were in a car accident.

Girl:

     A car accident?!

Light:

     Yes, the car flipped.

Girl:

Am I the only one who died?

Light:

No, your little sister has already crossed over.

Girl:

     Oh.

Light:

(Hold out his hand.) Are you ready to go?

Another man suddenly appears. He has big, ripped, black wings.

Dark:

     No! You can’t go.

Girl:

     Who are you?

Dark:

(Ignores her. Turns to Light.) Long time no see. Still trying to take the guilty into Heaven?

Light:

     All are welcomed into Heaven.

Dark:

Then why do I live in Hell?

Light:

     It was your choice.

Dark:

(Laughs.) Best decision I’ve ever made. (Now speaks to Girl.) So you wanna come join us?

Girl:

     Us?

Dark:

Yes. Myself and all the others who made the right choice.

Girl:

     Who are you?

Dark:

Oh, I forgot. My name is Darefer. My friends call me Dare.

Girl:

     And who are you?

Light:

     My name’s Zackriel.

Dare:

     But I’M the hot one.

Zackriel:

     But I’M the good one.

Dare:

     Hot beats good ANY day.

Zackriel:

(Crosses his arms.) And that’s why you’re in Hell.

Dare:

     And I like it.

Girl:

     (Completely lost.) Uh…

Dare:

Come with me… if you dare.

Zackriel:

     (Fake laughs.) Ha-ha " no.

Dare:

(Turns to Girl.) So, Amanda, are you ready?

Amanda:

How do you know my name?

Dare:

(Chuckles.) We’ve always knows your name. You see, you’ve always been on our list for quite some time.

Amanda:

I have? Why have I been on there?

Zackriel:

Don’t listen to him, Amanda. He’s trying to deceive you.

Dare:

You’re the one promising unconditional love and forgiveness.

Zackriel:

     What’s so bad about that?

Dare:

It’s a load of bull. That’s what that is. (To Amanda.) All you’ll face is judgment, and then they just decide to send you down to us anyway, so you might as well come with me to save time.

Amanda:

How would you know what I want?

Dare:

We’ve been watching you. We’ve seen you steal, we’ve seen you cheat. We’ve seen you beat up your poor little sister for no reason. You belong with us.

Zackriel:

God is forgiving. He loves you as you are.

Amanda:

     (Whispers.) No one loves me.

Dare:

But I tell you what, you don’t need it. You’ll be fine without love.

Amanda:

     Are you sure?

Dare:

Of course I am. Love is nothing but a big lie. Everyone eventually leaves you.

Zackriel:

Don’t listen to him. He’s just trying to convince you to go with him.

Amanda:

You mean he can’t just take me?

Dare:

(Holds his hand over his heart.) Alas, I cannot. Free will and all that crap. You have to CHOOSE to come with me.

Amanda:

     What happens if I do?

Dare:

(Makes a “yes” with his fist.) Score one for Dare.

Zackriel:

You’ll spend the rest of eternity in the seven gates of Hell.

Dare:

(Smiles.) We’ll all end up there sometime.

Zackriel:

(Glares at Dare.) Heaven is forever.

Amanda:

What if I don’t want to go? Can I stay here?

Dare:

You can, but that’s no fun.

Light:

     Heaven wants you. Welcomes you.

Amanda:

(Crosses her arms.) Only if I go.

Dare:

     She’s right.

Zackriel:

     Silence.

Dare:

     Ooooh. Attitude.

Zackriel:

Why are you still speaking? I said silence.

Dare:

(Leans in close.) See what I mean about the lies? He makes you think that he’s all goody-two shoes when really, deep down, he’s just like us.

Amanda:

So why should I go with YOU?

Dare:

At least we’re honest about who we are. We don’t deceive you. We tell it to you like it is. It’s your choice to believe it or not.

Amanda:

What if I don’t want to believe either of you?

Dare:

(Shrugs.) Then you’ll spend the rest of eternity here.

Makes it look like she was going to choose someone, but then pauses.

Amanda:

Can I ask you a question?

Dare:

     What is it NOW?

Zackriel:

     Shhh. Don’t be rude.

Dare:

     WhatEVER!

Amanda:

Are my parents there? In heaven?

Zackriel:

Of course they are. All of your family’s in heaven.

Dare:

     That’s a lie.

Amanda:

     What?

Dare:

You know you’re crazy Uncle Joe who died a few years back? He’s in Hell.

Amanda:

     (Shrugs.) Should’ve known.

Zackriel:

Alright. NOW are you ready to go?

Amanda:

I think so… (Hesitantly takes a step toward Zackriel.)

Dare:

Well, what about me? Aren’t you going to come to hell? Make the RIGHT choice?

Amanda:

The only right choice I see is following my instincts.

Dare:

And they’re saying (Starts chanting.) Go to Hell! Go to Hell!

Amanda:

No, they’re saying take his hand. He’ll keep me safe.

Zackriel holds out his hand, and Amanda takes it.

Dare:

(Mutters to himself.) D****t, not another one. Next time you won’t be so lucky.

Dare disappears.

Zackriel:

     Come.

Amanda:

     Yes. Please take me home.

There’s a bright white light, and they’re gone.

I agree with Ella.
But I should add that it needs a revision, maybe you should read it aloud to yourself. That always helps me when I;m writing conversations. Though my sister thinks I'm crazy because of it.
Anyway, I thought it was pretty good regardless. I love the fact you didn't revel her decision, leaves me wanting more.

I think this would be a better book than a play, but I do like it, curious as to where it is going.
