Long-Awaited

Long-Awaited

A Poem by ashleydawn

Closing my eyes
at your command
I turned to my ears
in curiosity.
I heard you turn around
and rustle in your bag,
spinning back to me
with another instruction.
Hold my hands out.
I did as I was told
and you gently placed an object
into my palm.
I felt its rough surface
and jagged edges
and begged for sight
to be released.
You complied easily
and I opened my eyes to find
a shell; dirty and smelly
from the beach trip you took
and tried to hide slight disappointment.
But you shook your head and guided my fingers
to open the piece at its hinges
revealing a smooth, light catching surface
"It took me forever to find these." you explained.
"What are they?" I asked in awe
"Your wings."
