Fear of Commitment

Fear of Commitment

A Poem by ashleydawn

Small whispers flood the silence
as your arm swallows the distance between us
Calloused, tender fingers sweep away salted anguish
and we sit silently for a while
Just rocking our weight in time with the crickets
Shudders escape my fragile heart
Erupting throughout my body
Squeezing me tighter, you try to get me to look
Into the eyes of my heartache
Naively coaxing me to pain myself
Heavy breathing and floods of emotion
Come faster than before
My fingers slip off the metal
and I'm thrust off my pedestal
to the rough terrain below
The deep scrapes can't compare to
my wounds scarred inside
So confused you are
of why I'm exhibiting such features
I got so close, too close
to almost letting you in
I pick myself up
with whatever small ounce of dignity I have
Your arms held open for me to fall into
You don't understand the risks
I can't handle it
I need to burn bridges
