I will fightA Poem by AshleyI will fight these stereotypesI am constrained Kept in chains By the expectations Society sets upon me By the stereotypes Made up by those who gripe About people like me Because before I started my life I forgot to check Before I clicked accept So now I’m living my life With terms and conditions I don’t agree with So I’ll sue our society For my right to be And although I’m just me I will fight Although I’m just bird Fighting to bring down a mountain I’ll still take flight I’ll fight for those birds Who I know and who I don’t I’ll fight for those who are yet to be And those who came before me I’ll fight with the strength of two For those who can’t I fight for those you don’t realize you hate For those you don’t realize exist I will wear down that mountain Of prejudice and pigheadedness To a billion grains of sand And wash it away in an ocean of love Because we don’t deserve To be degraded, debased and discouraged Because of the colour of our plumage Or because of who we love Or because our wings aren’t built the same as yours We deserve to be equal We deserve to have the same opportunity To rise To fly To be ourselves So I will fight For everyone Whether or not I like them makes no difference Because if I condemn those I dislike On something they cannot change Then I am as bad as those I fight
So fight with me So we can be a million birds Taking down a million different mountains For if we fight together Then these mountains Will melt like snow In front of a hot fire
Fight with me Because no matter how many times you clip my wings Or how many times you shove me down No matter how many times You tell me I am worth nothing I will fight I will fight I WILL FIGHT © 2017 Ashley |
