Filtered words

Filtered words

A Poem by Ashley
"

We filter our words and monitor what we say, isn't it so hard to let go of those filters?

"

We all have our filters

Ones we slot on and off

Different ones for

Different people

But never is our mouth free

To run off

To tell every thought

My mother will never know

Exactly what I do at school

Or when I found that fact

Or what I noticed

My brothers will never know

Exactly what I think of them

Or what words I bite back as a response to their insults

Or what I do on my computer

My father will never know

Exactly why I hide myself away

Or why I didn’t swim

Or why my eyes are red

My friends will never know

Exactly what happened at my old school

Or who I wish was mine

Or why I hate those ideas

My enemies will never know

Exactly who I am

Or what I really want

Or what I meant when I said that

No-one will ever know

Exactly what I did at night

Or when that happened

Or the thoughts that pass through my head

No-one will ever know

Exactly what I wanted to say

Our filters never leave us

They are built

By actions

And reactions

By words

And everything you left unsaid

By glances

And looks

By those around us

They are built

When we care what

Those around us think

They are built

To save ourselves
